🎭 Academic Research in Digital Creativity – Exploring New Trends
Uneven Participation & Entry in CCI Industries
Young people are highly active in digital spaces. They create, share, and engage online every day. Yet participation in the cultural and creative industries (CCI) remains uneven. Many young creatives are active but unsure how their work connects to real opportunities. The problem is not effort or motivation. The problem is understanding how the sector works and how to take part in it.
In the cultural and creative industries, entry is rarely straightforward. There is no single path in. Many creatives begin through informal or non-formal routes. These include self-directed learning, short projects, volunteering, or community work. These paths offer flexibility, but little structure. Information is scattered. Expectations are unclear. Signals about what counts as relevant experience are inconsistent. As a result, participation depends not only on creative ability but also on access to guidance and clear reference points.
Digicreate Empower Research Initiative
To better understand these issues, Digicreate Empower is developing a research initiative focused on how young creatives engage with the CCI. The research looks at participation patterns, access to information, and how prepared individuals feel when engaging with professional contexts. It covers different creative fields and entry routes. The focus is on how people find opportunities, assess their readiness, and decide on next steps. The research looks at practice, not formal credentials.
Early Insights from the Research
Based on Digicreate Empower’s currently analyzed data from young creatives active across different cultural and creative fields, around half of the respondents report uncertainty about where to find relevant opportunities and what is expected of them when engaging with organizations or professional partners. Roughly one-third indicate difficulty assessing whether their skills and experience are sufficient, particularly when their background is non-formal or self-directed. These challenges are reinforced by the way information is distributed across platforms, networks, and informal channels, which respondents describe as fragmented and challenging to navigate. In practice, this uneven access to clarity and guidance contributes to delayed participation and, in some cases, withdrawal from opportunities that feel unclear or inaccessible.
From Research to Practice: Informing the Digicreate Empower Platform
As the research moves toward finalization and final insights come in, the analysis will help direct the creation of the Digicreate Empower platform. The platform is designed to respond to gaps identified in the research. It aims to offer clearer orientation and more structured access to information. The goal is to support young creatives at different stages of participation in the CCI. By grounding its design in observed patterns and reported challenges, Digicreate Empower seeks to make pathways into the sector more transparent. Further reflections and developments will be shared through future blog posts, alongside other activities prepared by the project consortium.
