Why Digital Citizenship Matters – Teaching youth to navigate the online world responsibly

Why Digital Citizenship Matters for Today’s Young Creators

Digital citizenship is the ability to participate safely, responsibly, and confidently in online spaces, a skill set that has become essential for young people growing up and creating in today’s digital environment.

Research shows that just 10% of individuals can influence the norms of an entire community, shaping how others behave and what they feel comfortable expressing. Even one empowered voice can help counter harmful patterns online and encourage healthier, more inclusive participation.

Young people today navigate social media, AI tools, fast-moving content streams, and constant peer interaction. In our recent report, we learned that young creatives believe that soft skills for collaboration are as important as technical skills. One participant noted: “You can’t survive alone in this field. Collaboration is our safety net.”

Without guidance, navigating these environments can feel overwhelming.

The DIGICREATE Empower project creates tools to help young creatives collaborate online and create a safe and supportive community of creatives in the CCI Sectors, with a focus on supporting soft skills and transversal competences – improving communication, teamwork, adaptability, entrepreneurship, and creativity.

These skills form the foundation of becoming a confident and responsible digital creator – someone who contributes positively to their community and helps shape better digital spaces for everyone.
